McEwen wins the all-Manitoba match-up over reigning Brier and World champion Stoughton, completing an undefeated week in Kingston, ON
KINGSTON, ON, December 18, 2011 – It was a match-up of two familiar foes in today’s championship final at the BDO Canadian Open at the K-Rock Centre in Kingston, ON as Mike McEwen came out on top in his hard-fought battle with Jeff Stoughton. Along with the title of champion at the second Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event of the season, the teams were vying for a larger share in the $100,000 purse and valuable Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) points.
Both playing out of Winnipeg, MB, McEwen and Stoughton had met many times before, including the last Manitoba provincial play-downs which Stoughton won in an extra end. Following that win, Stoughton went on to with the 2011 Brier and the World Championship. KINGSTON, ON, December 17, 2011 – The championship final at the BDO Canadian Open features an all-Manitoba match-up between the world #1-ranked Mike McEwen and reigning World champion Jeff Stoughton. Along with the title of champion at the second Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event of the season on the line, tomorrow’s winner will take home at least $24,000 and 40 Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) points.
McEwen is the defending champion at the BDO Canadian Open and has yet to lose a game so far this week. Stoughton’s last Grand Slam win came at this very event in 2006. Both teams play out of Winnipeg, MB and are no doubt thinking about local bragging rights along with another victory tomorrow.

Gatineau/Levis, QC’s Jean-Michel Menard defeats Edmonton, AB’s Kevin Koe in this morning’s tie-breaker draw to reach the quarter-finals
KINGSTON, ON, December 17, 2011 – After finishing the round-robin portion of the BDO Canadian Open with identical 3-2 records, former World champion Kevin Koe of Edmonton, AB, faced former Brier champion Jean-Michel Menard of Gatineau/Levis, QC, in this morning’s tie-breaker draw. The two teams were playing for the right to enter this afternoon’s quarter-final draw as the #8 seed and continue their quest for the title at the second Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event of the season.
Menard got out to a quick start thanks to some miscues by Team Koe then managed to hold on to the early lead to secure a seven-end 8-3 victory and advance to the quarter-finals.

KINGSTON, ON, December 16, 2011 – The round-robin portion of the BDO Canadian Open has come to an end, however, the playoff picture has not entirely sorted out. Thanks to a tie for the final playoff berth, a tie-breaker draw will be played tomorrow morning at Kingston, ON’s K-Rock Centre to determine the last quarter-finalist in the second Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event of the season.
Heading into tonight’s final round-robin draw at the BDO Canadian Open, five playoff spots had already been claimed, leaving just three more available for the five teams that were still in the running. KINGSTON, ON, December 14, 2011 – It was a star-studded beginning to the second Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event of the season tonight in Kingston, ON with rock stars of all kinds taking to the ice at the BDO Canadian Open.
Although the tournament features 18 of the world’s top men’s curling teams, the first big names to take to the ice at the BDO Canadian Open were actual rock stars, Gord Sinclair and Paul Langlois of Kingston’s own The Tragically Hip.
